Team leadership for a comprehensive conflict analysis across three GTZ programme countries in Central Asia and Afghanistan. The project covered Kyrgyzstan (Batken oblast), Tajikistan and Afghanistan, examining conflict dynamics, livelihoods and local governance structures relevant to GTZ programming. Field research was implemented through local teams in all three countries, trained and supervised by ARC.

Tasks included:

• Methods development and guidelines for conflict analysis (methodology guide produced March 2003)
• Preparation and supervision of local field teams in Batken, Tajikistan and Afghanistan
• Field research including expert interviews and focus groups
• Development of handouts and key concept frameworks (compiled April 2003)
• Lessons-learned synthesis from Caucasus experience applied to Central Asia
• Regional report synthesis and country-specific reporting
• Development of a conflict matrix and development indicators

Results: Multi-country conflict analysis report; methodology guide; regional synthesis; country reports Kyrgyzstan/Batken, Tajikistan and Afghanistan; conflict matrix; lessons-learned documentation; training materials for local researchers.
